The Nordic Ecolabel - a World-leading Ecolabel

The Nordic Ecolabel is the official Ecolabel of the Nordic countries and was established in 1989 by the Nordic Council of Ministers with the purpose of providing an environmental labelling system that would contribute to a sustainable manufacturing and consumption.

To do this, criteria are developed for product groups and companies who have products within these groups and who meet the requirements, can apply for a Nordic Ecolabel license. The Nordic Ecolabel was also initiated as a practical tool for consumers to help them actively choose environmentally-sound products. It is an ISO 14024 type 1 Ecolabelling system and is a third-party control organ.

Each Nordic country has local offices with the responsibility for criteria development, control visits, licensing and marketing. In Denmark Nordic Ecolabel is administered by Ecolabelling Denmark at Danish Standards Foundation, in Sweden by Ecolabelling Sweden AB, in Finland by Finnish Standards, in Norway by The Foundation for Ecolabelling, and in Iceland by the The Environment Agency that operates under the direction of the Ministry for the Environment.
